Western was contracted by Soncin Construction to provide the formwork and rigging for the Simcoe Street Tunnel Project in downtown Toronto, Ontario. The formwork consisted of three forms for three different size girders, the largest of which is 4′-0″x4′-0’x 52′-0″ long, fabricated at Western’s Barrie facility. Western also supplied the rigging required to lift and relocate each of the precast girders and place in storage under this contract.
During the second phase of this project, Western continued to complete the Simcoe Street Tunnel by installing the new concrete girders, which were originally fabricated in the fall of 2006. The girders were loaded using a 44A hydraulic gantry at the splice bed where they were fabricated and transported uphill to a modified 48A – 800 ton Gantry. The girders were transported using a multi-axle trailer, which greatly increased the versatility of the transporter in such a tight and crowded site. As the girders arrived under the gantry, they were lifted and placed on the respective bearing pads.
