The back-up carrier is a ‘train’ of four structures that follow the TBM in the tunnel (see project ‘Niagara Tunnel Boring Machine Removal (Big Becky)), the largest of them being five stories tall, support equipment, power supplies and material storage. Weighing up to 500,000 lbs each, the back-up carrier structures varied drastically and each required a different method of removal.
